If you searched gst invoice vs payment receipt india, a buyer probably paid on UPI and then asked for “the invoice.” You forwarded the PDF from email and they said that is not enough for accounts. This page is that split only. Registration and threshold live in GST for digital products India. Income tax is separate: Income tax for digital creators India. This is not tax or legal advice. Confirm with a chartered accountant. Official portals: GST and Income Tax. UPI rails: NPCI UPI.

⚠️ Note
Short version: a payment receipt proves the buyer paid. A GST tax invoice is a compliance document registered sellers issue under GST rules. Ownstreet optional PDF receipts are receipts. We do not issue GST tax invoices and we are not a GST e-commerce operator. Putting a GSTIN on a receipt header does not turn it into a tax invoice.
The DM that starts this argument
Student buys a ₹199 notes pack. They want proof for parents. A freelancer buys a Notion kit on GPay and wants something for reimbursement. A company buys a workshop recording and accounts wants a GST tax invoice for input credit. Same word “invoice.” Three different documents. If you answer all three with the same WhatsApp screenshot, one of them will bounce.
GST invoice vs payment receipt India, in one table
| Payment receipt | GST tax invoice | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Proof of payment and what was bought | GST document with tax break-up, if you must issue one |
| Typical buyer | Student, creator, parent, small freelancer | GST-registered business that asked for it |
| Needs GSTIN on you? | No, if you are not registered. Do not invent one | Yes, yours, plus buyer GSTIN when it is a B2B supply |
| Ownstreet PDF | Optional Pro receipt in buyer email | We do not generate this |
| Input tax credit | Not what this PDF is for | Only if a real tax invoice matches GST rules. Ask a CA |
CAs still own the exact fields (SAC, place of supply, tax amount). This table is a buyer-language map, not a filing template.
What ownstreet actually emails
After a completed UPI or card payment, the buyer gets the file (or download link) plus a purchase email. On Pro, you can attach a payment receipt PDF with product name, amount in rupees, and optional business name, address, and GSTIN as a label. Product copy is blunt on purpose: receipt, not GST tax invoice. How to turn that on: PDF buyer email stamping India. Plans: Pricing.
ℹ️ Quick answer
Free plan still sells one live product with UPI. Receipt PDFs are Pro. Neither plan files GST for you. Bank payouts need PAN. That is identity for money, not an invoice engine.
If you are not GST-registered
- Send a payment receipt or UPI success proof. That is usually enough for a student or parent.
- Do not print a fake GSTIN, fake HSN, or an 18% tax line you never charged.
- If a company insists on a GST tax invoice you cannot issue, say so in one sentence and offer the receipt plus your PAN if their CA asked for it.
- Crossing the GST gate is a turnover and channel question. Start here: Is selling digital products legal without GST India.
If you are GST-registered
The ownstreet receipt can still go to the buyer as payment proof. You still raise a GST-compliant tax invoice in your accounting tool (Clear, Zoho, Busy, a CA Excel, whatever they use) when the law requires it. Copy GSTIN onto the ownstreet receipt header only if it is yours and you are actually registered. Do not treat the store PDF as the invoice you file or the buyer’s ITC document.

Rate, SAC, and whether the listed ₹499 already includes GST are CA work. The GST guide covers that at a high level. This page only stops you from mixing the two PDFs.
How to reply when they say “send invoice”
- Parent / student: “Here is the payment receipt and the download email. That is proof of purchase.”
- Freelancer expense: receipt plus UPI reference. If their office needs a GST tax invoice, they need a GST-registered seller.
- Company / college: ask if they need a GST tax invoice for ITC. If yes and you are not registered, you cannot issue one. If yes and you are registered, send the tax invoice from your books, not only the store receipt.
💡 Tip
Keep the order row: date, amount, product, buyer email. Ownstreet stores completed sales. That log is what a CA uses later. A pretty PDF without a matching bank credit is still a problem.
What this is not
- Not an ITR form. Bank credits can still be income: see the income-tax post linked above.
- Not TDS. Platform fees and UPI MDR are not a tax invoice. TDS on payouts is the next post in this series.
- Not a reason to delay the product. Sell, log the sale, issue the document your CA says you must issue.
FAQ
Is gst invoice vs payment receipt india the same PDF with a new title?
No. Renaming a receipt “tax invoice” does not make it one. Fields, GSTIN, and whether you are registered matter. Ask a CA before you design a Canva invoice that claims 18% GST you never remitted.
Does ownstreet issue GST tax invoices?
No. Optional Pro PDFs are payment receipts. We are not a GST e-commerce operator.
Can I put my GSTIN on the ownstreet receipt?
If you are GST-registered, you can add GSTIN as a label on the receipt header. That still does not replace the tax invoice your CA wants in your books.
A buyer paid ₹2,000 on UPI. Is the GPay screenshot enough?
It is payment proof. It is not a GST tax invoice. For a consumer sale it is often enough. For a GST-registered buyer who wants ITC, it is usually not.
Should I stop selling until I can invoice?
If the file is yours and the checkout is your store, many small creators sell first and add GST invoicing when registration is actually required. Confirm with a CA. Launch path: Sell digital products India.
