GST for Digital Products India (2026)

If you searched gst for digital products india, you are probably stuck before the first upload: is a ₹299 ebook even allowed without GSTIN? This page is the dedicated hub for that question. Short GST FAQs already live in Sell digital products India and Digital product store India. Here we unpack threshold, sales channel, invoices vs receipts, and what to do this week. This is not tax or legal advice. Confirm with a chartered accountant for your PAN, state, and stack. Official portal: GST.

⚠️ Note

Quick answer: many small creators selling from their own store or social link are told the services threshold (often cited around ₹20 lakh a year in most states, lower in some) is the first gate. Selling through a classic e-commerce operator (Amazon-style marketplace that collects TCS) is a different rule set and often needs GSTIN earlier. Ownstreet payment receipts are not GST tax invoices. Ask a CA before you treat any blog, including this one, as a filing plan.

What GST is (and is not) for a PDF seller

GST is an indirect tax on supply of goods and services in India. Most creator downloads (ebooks, templates, presets, recorded lessons) are treated closer to services than to a kirana shop selling soap. That is why people quote the services turnover threshold, not the higher goods threshold. Your CA maps the actual SAC/HSN and place of supply. You still owe income tax on profit even if you are not GST-registered. ITR is a separate post in this series.

  • GST: registration, charging tax on invoices (if registered), returns.
  • Income tax: ITR on your net income from UPI sales.
  • PAN: identity for bank payouts and ITR. Not the same as GSTIN.
  • Payment receipt: proof the buyer paid. Not automatically a GST tax invoice.

Do you need GST to sell a ₹299 digital product?

A small ticket does not skip GST by itself. Registration is about your aggregate turnover and how you sell, not the price of one SKU. A creator with ₹50,000 a year in template sales and a creator with ₹25 lakh in course sales are not in the same bucket.

Situation (typical, verify)What people usually ask a CADo not assume
Own store / Instagram bio / WhatsApp link, low turnoverAm I under the services threshold for my state? That GST is illegal on day one
Turnover crossing the published thresholdWhen do I apply, and from which date? That you can wait until next FY without checking
Amazon / Flipkart / Meesho-style operatorIs GSTIN mandatory from sale one? That every website with a cart is the same as Amazon

CBIC publishes registration rules and turnover limits that change. Read the live text on gst.gov.in and get a CA to apply it to your FY turnover across all PANs/businesses you already run (tuition, freelance, products).

Own store vs marketplace (the question that actually matters)

Indian GST has a special track for supplies through an e-commerce operator. That is why Amazon and Flipkart sellers hear “GSTIN from the first rupee.” A creator who only shares ownstreet.in/username or an Instagram bio link is not automatically in that Amazon fact pattern. Whether a given platform is an e-commerce operator for GST is a legal classification, not a marketing slogan. Ownstreet does not claim ECO status in this article. Your CA decides what your contracts and checkout actually are.

  • Direct supply from your page: threshold language in Section 22-style registration is the usual starting point.
  • Operator/marketplace that is required to do TCS: Section 24-style compulsory registration comes up in CA conversations.
  • Mixing both (Shopify plus Amazon) can drag the stricter rule onto the whole setup.

ℹ️ Quick answer

Operational habit while you wait on the CA: keep a sales log (date, buyer email, amount, product). Bank payouts on ownstreet need PAN. That is KYC, not a GST registration. See Sell ebooks India bank account PAN and Bank payouts.

If you are GST-registered: rate and invoices

Many digital services are discussed at 18% GST once you are registered. Classification is not DIY. A CA picks the SAC and whether you charge GST on the listed price or build it in. Registered sellers generally need GST-compliant tax invoices (GSTIN, place of supply, tax break-up), not only a “thanks for paying” PDF.

Ownstreet Pro can attach a PDF payment receipt to the buyer email, with optional business name and GSTIN as a label on that receipt. Product copy is explicit: it is a receipt, not a GST tax invoice. You still generate proper tax invoices in your accounting tool if the law requires them. Deep dive on that split ships as the receipt vs invoice post in this series. Stamping feature: PDF buyer email stamping India. Plans: Pricing.

What to do this week (practical, not a filing)

  • Write last 12 months of all income under your PAN (not only PDFs).
  • Note where you sell: own URL, Instagram, WhatsApp, Amazon, Etsy, Gumroad.
  • Book 30 minutes with a CA. Ask: registration now or later, and invoice format.
  • Keep UPI checkout working. Tax confusion is not a reason to take payment on a personal QR forever. Launch path: Sell digital products India.
  • Do not invent GSTIN on buyer emails if you are not registered.

Related tax questions (next in this series)

  • Legal without GST registration (fear query, same week’s follow-up).
  • Income tax / ITR for creator UPI income.
  • TDS on digital product sales.
  • Presumptive tax (44ADA vs 44AD) once numbers are real.

Setup still matters more than the GST tab on day one if you have zero sales: Sell digital products without website India. Payments: Razorpay setup for digital creators. UPI rails: NPCI UPI.

FAQ: GST for Digital Products India

Is GST for digital products india mandatory on the first sale?

Not automatically for every Instagram PDF seller. It depends on turnover, state, and whether you sell through an e-commerce operator. Confirm with a CA. Do not skip registration if you already crossed the limit.

Can I sell on ownstreet without GSTIN?

Product onboarding uses PAN for bank payouts, not GSTIN as a hard block. That is not a CA opinion that you never need GST. Registration is between you and the law.

Does ownstreet issue my GST tax invoices?

No. Optional PDF payment receipts are receipts. GST tax invoices, if required, are your compliance documents.

Is GST 18% on every ebook?

Only if you are registered and your supply is classified that way. Unregistered sellers below threshold generally do not add GST on the listing. Registered sellers follow what their CA files. Check current rates on the GST portal.

I sell to US buyers from India. Same rules?

Export of services and place of supply are extra chapters. Foreign platforms selling into India (OIDAR) are another chapter. Do not mix those with a Pune coach selling to Pune students on UPI.

Bottom line

GST for digital products india is a registration and invoice problem, not a reason to freeze the product. Learn the threshold and channel split, keep a clean sales log, generate real tax invoices only if you are supposed to, and let a CA sign off. Then sell with INR prices and UPI like any other Indian checkout. Start the store: Signup.
