The first question most creators ask before listing a product is simple: how do you get paid on ownstreet, and where does the money sit in between? Fair question. You are trusting a platform with your buyers and your income, so the money path should be boring, visible, and explained before your first sale, not after. This post follows one sale from a buyer's UPI tap to the credit in your bank account, including the fees taken on the way and the reasons a payout can take longer. If you only want the setup clicks, the step guide is here: ownstreet bank payout how it works. This post is about the money itself.
Quick answer
Quick answer: the buyer pays by UPI or card on your product page through Razorpay. On bank-payout mode, Razorpay Route transfers your share to the bank account you linked. Your buyer usually gets the file in under a minute, while your bank credit typically lands in 2 to 3 working days. Those are two separate clocks.
The journey of one sale, step by step
- **1. Buyer pays:** a buyer opens your product page, taps pay, and completes UPI in apps like GPay or PhonePe, or pays by card. The payment runs on Razorpay rails (NPCI UPI overview).
- **2. Payment is confirmed:** Razorpay confirms the money was captured. Only then does ownstreet mark the order paid and unlock the buyer's download. An unpaid or failed payment never unlocks the file.
- **3. Your share is transferred:** on bank-payout mode, Razorpay Route moves your share toward the linked account you created with your bank account number, IFSC, and PAN. There is no ownstreet wallet balance you need to withdraw from.
- **4. Razorpay settles to your bank:** settlement runs on Razorpay's schedule for India domestic payments, typically 2 to 3 working days. Multiple sales can arrive together in one bank credit instead of one transfer per sale.
- **5. You can track it:** your dashboard Orders view shows the order and its payout status, so a paid order, a pending settlement, and a settled credit are three different states you can check yourself.
Notice what is not in that path: ownstreet does not collect your sales into a company account and pay you manually at the end of the month, and you do not raise a withdrawal request and wait for approval. The transfer is a payment-system movement through Razorpay Route, which is exactly why the timing follows banking schedules instead of our support hours.
Two clocks: your buyer's file vs your bank credit
| Event | Typical timing | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer download unlocks | Usually under a minute on UPI | Payment confirmed, file delivered by email and success screen |
| Route transfer is created | After payment capture | Your share starts moving to your linked account |
| Bank credit in your account | Typically 2 to 3 working days | Razorpay settlement schedule; weekends and bank holidays can add a day |
| First ever payout | Can take longer than the typical window | Your linked account activation must be active before money moves |
Most payout panic comes from mixing these clocks up. A buyer sending you a screenshot of the file while your bank app shows nothing is normal on day one. Paid in Orders means the sale is real. Settled means the bank credit has landed. The gap between them is the settlement window, not a missing payment.
What gets deducted before the money reaches you
ownstreet takes 0% platform fee on product sales. That does not mean moving money is free: Razorpay charges for processing the payment, and on bank-payout mode a Route transfer charge can apply on top. We publish this instead of hiding it, and the full fee discussion is here: Is ownstreet really free? Hidden fees explained.
| On a ₹499 sale (illustrative) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buyer pays | ₹499.00 |
| Razorpay domestic gateway fee at 2% | ₹9.98 |
| GST at 18% on that gateway fee | ₹1.80 |
| Route transfer at 0.1%, before any platform fee row | ₹0.50 |
| Approximate credit before other live rows | About ₹486.72 |
That math uses the public Razorpay India pricing rows checked on 18 Oct 2026: domestic gateway at 2% per successful transaction plus 18% GST on the fee, and Route at 0.1% plus platform fees per transaction (Razorpay pricing). Your live dashboard row can differ if your account has a negotiated rate, so model your margin on the row you actually see, not on a blog table, ours included.
Bank payouts or your own Razorpay account?
There are two ways to receive money on ownstreet, and they differ in whose Razorpay account captures the payment. On bank-payout mode, checkout runs on the platform Razorpay account and Route transfers your share to your bank, so you skip merchant signup and API keys entirely. On BYOK mode, you connect your own Razorpay keys, the full sale amount is captured in your own Razorpay account, and settlement follows your own Razorpay schedule and KYC. Connecting keys is covered here: Razorpay setup for digital creators.
| Bank payouts (Route) | Your own Razorpay (BYOK) | |
|---|---|---|
| Razorpay merchant account needed | No | Yes, with your KYC |
| Where the payment is captured | Platform Razorpay, then Route transfer to you | Your Razorpay account directly |
| Bank credit timing | Typically 2 to 3 working days | Your Razorpay settlement schedule |
| Best for | First product, fastest start | Creators who already run Razorpay and want one dashboard |
Why a payout can take longer than usual
- **Activation still pending:** your linked account is under Razorpay review, which usually takes 1 to 3 working days after you submit bank and PAN details. Sales should wait until the status shows active.
- **Name mismatch:** the account holder name, PAN, and bank records do not match. This is the most common fixable delay. Use the exact legal name your bank shows.
- **Weekends and bank holidays:** settlement skips non-banking days, so a Friday sale can credit later than a Tuesday sale.
- **A refunded order:** a refund pulls that sale's transfer back before the buyer is refunded, so a refunded sale does not pay out. More on that below.
- **First payout caution:** payment systems often review a brand new account's first settlements more carefully. It speeds up once the account has history.
What happens if a buyer refunds or disputes a payment?
A refund is handled in a strict order on bank-payout mode: the Route transfer for that sale is reversed first, and only then is the buyer refunded from the platform account. That order protects you from a situation where a buyer gets money back while the payout also lands in your bank. If a payment was already settled before a dispute lands, the adjustment shows against that order instead of silently coming out of a later sale without a record. Either way, the order row in your dashboard is the paper trail: sale, transfer, reversal, refund, in that sequence.
FAQ
How do you get paid on ownstreet without a Razorpay merchant account?
Through bank payouts. You submit your bank account number, IFSC, and PAN once, Razorpay Route creates a linked account for you, and your share of every sale is transferred to that bank account. No merchant dashboard, no API keys, and no withdrawal request to ownstreet.
How long does it take for the money to reach my bank?
Typically 2 to 3 working days for India domestic Route settlements after the payment is captured. Weekends, bank holidays, and a first payout on a new account can add time. Your buyer gets the file much sooner, usually under a minute on UPI, because delivery and settlement are separate clocks.
Does ownstreet hold my money?
No wallet, no monthly manual payout, and no withdrawal approval from us. On bank-payout mode the payment is captured on Razorpay and Route transfers your share to your linked bank account. On BYOK mode the payment is captured in your own Razorpay account from the start. In both modes the money moves on payment rails, not on our promise to pay you later.
What fees come out of my sale?
ownstreet takes 0% platform fee. Razorpay's payment processing fee applies on successful payments, and a Route transfer charge can apply on bank-payout mode. On the public domestic rows checked 18 Oct 2026, that is 2% plus 18% GST on the fee, and Route at 0.1% plus platform fees. Check your live Razorpay row for your exact numbers.
Will every sale arrive as a separate bank credit?
Not always. Settlements are batched on Razorpay's schedule, so several sales can land in one bank credit. Match the credit against your dashboard Orders and the settlement view instead of expecting one bank line per order.
What if a payout looks missing?
Check three things in order: the order shows paid in your dashboard, your bank payout activation shows active, and 3 working days have passed since the sale. If all three are true and the credit is not there, contact support with the order id and sale date. We reply within 24 hours, Monday to Saturday IST, and we trace the transfer status rather than guessing.
